They say that it isn’t what you know but who you know. This is certainly true when it comes to job searching. More jobs come from network referrals than from internet job postings. So how can you build your job search network to maximize individual connections? Here are several steps you can take to optimize your networking in less than two weeks.
- Develop Your Strategy.
Create a detailed list of your current connections, connections of connections, and industry leaders that you feel can help you. Then create a plan to determine how to get in contact with each of those individuals.
- Reach Out.
Now is the time to get in touch with your contact list. If you can, organize in person meetings. Otherwise a phone conversation or an email can do in a pinch. Start to think about what you can do to help your contacts. Send them links to articles that might be useful to them. Connect them to each other if they are in a similar industry.
- Join Groups.
Begin by searching LinkedIn for groups that fit your industry or interests. Then drill down within your local area for face to face organizations. Get involved in those networks.
- Develop Your Brand.
This is the time to put your brand in a physical form. Order yourself some business cards. Make sure you have your name, your contact information, and a memorable headline that showcases what it is that you do. Add this information to your email signature and you may even want to start a blog or website.
- Schedule Time to Network.
Every day you should be reaching out to your contacts in a meaningful way. Schedule time in the morning to email or call individuals to touch base. Reserve the afternoons for coffee meetings or networking events to get together.
- Social Networking.
LinkedIn is one of the best tools available today, make use of it. Connect to the new individuals you’ve met at the events and begin to explore the relationships with them. Complete your LinkedIn profile so your connections can see all the right information directly on your page.
