Building a Talent Advantage: Advancing your Career Model.

The number one strategy every company should employ to be successful is to hire the right people for every role. Experts suggest that CEOs and business owners should take a more active role in the hiring process rather than just accepting the status quo. Anyone can make a hiring decision but making the right one is a skill that needs to be learned. Here are eight steps to creating a talent advantage for your company.

Complete Job Description.

The single worst sentence you can utter when looking for a new employee is “I’ll know it when I see it.” If you can’t tell someone what skills or background you are looking for you need to start over and define what those are.

Take Your Time.

Hurrying through a hiring decision doesn’t do you any favors, unless, of course, you meet someone you can’t go another minute without bringing on board. Give yourself plenty of time to get to know the candidates.

Always be Hiring.

You never know where you will find new talent. Always be on the lookout for individuals who can add greatness to your team. Network with everyone from graduate students to competitors.

Have a Talent Scout.

Some people have a natural ability to assess individuals and determine if they are going to be a good fit and be successful. This might not be your human resources manager. Find the one person in your company who has a knack for this and give them the resources they need to help you make effective hiring decisions.

Have a Team.

Hiring is a decision that is best made with several people providing input. Your team should consist of the following individuals:

  • Your HR manager, to understand employment law.
  • The talent scout to get that gut feeling on the candidate.
  • The supervisor for the position, who will be the person who understands the job and current team the best.
  • Your top sales executive, who can close the deal.

Shared Values.

You want to make sure that your new hire shares the values of your company and isn’t there just to get a paycheck. You want someone who wants to work for you.

Leadership Skills.

If you want worker bees, hire worker bees. If you want someone who can take your company to the next level, look for candidates with natural leadership ability.

Competitive Pay.

You get what you pay for. This is quite true, especially when it comes to the right talent for your organization. Real talent is worth the investment.
