An often overlooked office location is the employee break room. This is the space where your employees can walk away from their desks and enter a neutral zone. People don’t always think about the status of their break room and how it affects the overall mood of the office space. Here are some things you can do to make sure your break room is living up to the right expectations.
- Keep it Clean.
Employees should, of course, be responsible for cleaning up after themselves but the ultimate responsibility for the shape of the room falls squarely on the employer. Establish a cleaning routine. If you have a cleaning service make sure they are aware of the expectations in the break room. Also, be sure to keep it safe by taking care of spills on the floor or broken glass right away.
- Keep it Comfortable.
You want your break room to be inviting. You want to encourage your employees to make the proper use of it. You will want to include tables and chairs so individuals can comfortably eat their lunch, but why not also have comfortable couches along the wall or in a conversational arrangement? This will encourage employees to have a seat and relax once in a while. Just monitor the area to make sure no one takes advantage of the space.
- Provide Recreation.
Some companies offer their employees access to video games, table tennis, foosball or other fun games. These games not only engage the brain but they energize the body and can give employees a great boost to continue their day. A little friendly office competition never hurts, either.
- Provide the Right Food.
Healthy eating has become a big issue in office environments as well. Don’t keep the junk food vending machines on hand. Offer water and juice over soda and keep some health snacks on hand and encourage employees to help themselves. Some people are able to change their habits easily if the right choices are more readily available.
